Yes on Prop 8 in photos

A few editorial comments about people who support Proposition 8.

1.) The lady (yes, apparently it is a lady) below is named Ginger Reese. You'd think that she would support marriage for everyone given the fact that someone as ugly as she is would need to consider all possible suitors--male, female, and trans--to have even the slightest chance of finding someone who would want to marry her.

2.) The gentleman on the far left of the photo below (the one with the cane) is anti-gay marriage, but that's kind of understandable. When he was serving in the Civil War under Lee, buggery was a scourge amongst the fighting men and he has been against it ever since.

3.) The woman below is Mary Strauss from Oakland. Someone should tell her to take off her Obama/Biden pin, since neither Democratic candidate supports her son's right to marry.

4.) The bebeh in the stroller pictured below is named Crysta Rice. Hopefully Crysta will grow up to be the biggest k.d. lang-listening, "L Word"-watching, cous cous-eating, crew cut-having, flannel shirt-wearing, Harley-riding, labrys tattoo on her bicep-displaying butch bull dagger dyke to walk the planet, ever.

Marching naked ladies

I attended my first ever San Francisco Dyke March this evening with Discipulus Legis. Here are some pictures we took of this memorable evening.

I don't mean to be catty, but this one is like trying to put toothpaste back in the tube:

In case you can't read the sign, it says "TAKE OFF YOUR SHIRT." As we passed by, some lesbian behind us yelled out, "Take off YOUR shirt... on second thought, KEEP YOUR SHIRT ON." I can't say I disagreed with that sentiment:

The picture of this lesbian's tattoo is blurry, but it totally looks like Manannan, the evil wizard from King's Quest III:

See the resemblance?

I try to keep it clean on my blog, but I've got to post this. If you have small children nearby, cover their innocent eyes:

"Quick! My dignity! It's getting away! Catch it! Hurry!":

If you ever wondered what happened to Rainbow Brite after she enjoyed the heights of fame in the 1980s:

Gay men: "Wooooo! We love dykes! And beer! And dykes! But mostly beer!":

"I came to SF Dyke March and all I got was this lousy death wish":

Another ridiculous GLAAD press release

I love reading GLAAD press releases because they are such rich sources of (unintentional) humor. For example, this recent gem: Call on AP to Highlight Anti-Gay Attitudes that Lead to Violence Against Gay and Transgender People

The release claims that this AP story "unfairly assigns blame" to a 15-year-old gay student for his own murder, a hate crime. GLAAD says:
Although the AP received GLAAD’s Eye on the Media, which provided resources to report on the larger issue of the intersection of anti-gay bullying and violence, the story highlights allegations from students that King told Brandon McInerney, the shooter, that he liked him the day before he was shot.
You mean the Associated Press, a world-renowned news organization, did not change their reporting despite receiving a GLAAD Eye on the Media? I truly wonder how the AP manages to function without receiving these vital informational dispatches on a daily basis.

In any case, GLAAD is going after the AP for stating the obvious: that teenage boys are insecure and may freak out if other boys make sexual passes at them. Nowhere in the article is there any mention that this is an excuse for the crime, or that it justifies the crime, or that anyone believes it should be used as a legal defense, just that it is. On the whole, it's an excellent article and quotes many of the spokespeople and organizations that I'm sure GLAAD was pushing for, which makes the release all the more ridiculous.

Plus, GLAAD writes that the AP should explore the "intersection" of anti-gay bullying and violence, which is simply annoying. Whenever anyone wants to explore the "intersection" of anything, you know it's nothing more than dumb people trying to make themselves sound smart.

With sponsors like these...

More news on the GLAAD front. Apparently, GLAAD suckered Comcast into sponsoring it's "Be an ally & a friend" parade of B-list celebrities, um, I mean campaign. Comcast is currently a contender for Consumerist's "Worst Company in America" title. Not that I believe GLAAD has any scruples about their donors, but still, Comcast?

All that is old is new again

GLAAD announced today that they've hired someone to work in the San Francisco Bay Area. This is what their press release said:

The Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) announced today the hiring of Juan Barajas as a Senior Director to be based in the San Francisco/Bay Area. In this new role, Barajas will report directly to GLAAD President Neil G. Giuliano and will be responsible for strengthening GLAAD’s media advocacy and anti–defamation work in the region in its many forms and collaborating with other lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) and allied organizations.

For those of you who do not understand GLAAD-speak, let me translate: "People in San Francisco won't give us money because we don't have an office there (yes, we closed our office there years ago). We've tried to make it seem like we care about San Francisco by holding a lame awards ceremony there, but it hasn't worked out so well. Therefore, we're sending Mr. Barajas to see how much money he can bilk out of the San Francisco gays."

Does anyone want to place bets on how long he stays?

The perfect salve

You know what always makes me feel better about life? Making fun of GLAAD.

Do you see how GLAAD "apoints" six new members to the board? GLAAD "apoints," unlike the rest of us who "appoint." Also, check out the date. I love that the strategic misspelling has been up for nine days.

Donor dollars at work: GLAAD's Internets strategeriez

Today Discipulus Legis discovered that GLAAD has made its first foray into the world of Google AdWords. That is, if you go to Google and type in certain search phrases, GLAAD will come up at the top of the page as a sponsored link. Hooray!

The only problem is that the GLAAD sponsored link comes up on pages where glaad.org is the first organic link anyway. So, if you type in "gay and lesbian alliance," GLAAD is the first organic link and the only sponsored link. If you type in other impactful key words--like "gay media" or "gays in film"--GLAAD is not one of the top organic links and there's no sponsored link.

I tested those phrases because they seem like they might be words that the average web user would type in to find out more about gays in the media, and thus would be the perfect opportunity to highlight GLAAD in a web ad. But, I guess GLAAD finds it a better use of their donor dollars to advertise on pages where they get top billing anyway. Such a smart and strategic strategy!

I am also very sad to report that GLAAD has not purchased the phrase "changing hearts and minds." This is an oversight that must be remedied IMMEDIATELY.

Here's their ad link if you feel like clicking (they have to pay up each time you do): Clickity-click

Changing hearts and culturing drug-resistant bacteria

Wow! GLAAD finally said something about the whole "staph is a gay bacteria" thing, and it was only four days after the original stories began hitting the news! I guess now their media response time can be upgraded from "molasses" to "tortoise." Way to go, GLAAD!

(BTW, the photo on the right depicts some of the culture-changing work that GLAAD sponsors, a fundraiser sponsored by Absolut. I wonder if epidemiologists went to a GLAAD event and found the source of the gay staph outbreak...)

Atheists the new gays? Please say it isn't so!

Although I try to ignore everything that is posted on Townhall.com (or most of HuffingtonPost.com too, for that matter), I couldn't pass this one up. Apparently, Dinesh D'Souza takes issue with Richard Dawkins when he calls on atheists to start "coming out" of the closet just like the gays do. I deeply respect Dr. Dawkins and think he is a brilliant man, but I too take issue with him saying that atheists should be the new gays. Why? Because I would hope that atheists, a bunch of smart people, would pick a much better model than the gay rights movement, which, as we all know, is a total joke.

Where's Richard Dawkins when you need him?

Discipulus Legis took me on an impromptu date tonight to see For the Bible Tells Me So, a new documentary about fundamentalist Christians and the gays. It was good, but it was missing depth and the sense of angst that the interviewees were supposedly feeling about homosexuality and religion. There were abundant tears, but no sense of why people were crying (In contrast, Trembling Before G-d makes you understand why the film subjects were so upset.) The only truly effective and moving parts of the movie involve the story of Mary Lou Wallner and her daughter. She alone makes it worth seeing.

Of course, given my feelings about religion, I had strong feelings about the movie for other reasons. The opening credits of the movie show the usual "GOD HATES FAGS" imagery but it's intercut with commentary from learned religious academics. In response to these "simplistic" readings of the Bible, one academic says something like "you can have a 5th grade understanding of the Bible... when you're in 5th grade." A clever comment, but the Bible itself advocates a 5th grade understanding of life as a whole. You get a gold star for doing good, you get a time out for doing bad (albeit it a long and hot time out), when times get tough there's a fairy tale to make you feel better. My problem with what the Bible says about homosexuality has nothing to do with Leviticus 18:22; the problem starts at Genesis 1:1. "In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth." Um, what? The Bible contradicts or ignores what science has proven to be true (or has pretty good evidence to prove what is true). Who cares what it says about being gay? If it can't get the origin of the universe at least on the right track, it has bigger problems.

And yes, it was interesting to learn that in the original text of the Bible "abomination" meant "not customary," but would most people who believe in the Bible and seriously look to it for guidance understand this semantic hairsplitting? No! Dumb people read the Bible! Gays should embrace the fact that they've been excluded from religion. Embrace atheism and forge a new path not obstructed by all of this nonsense.

Our nation's founders would be proud

I pledge my allegiance,
to booze,
so that it can help my organization raise lots of money.

Don't question,
how basing all gay social events around alcohol consumption,
(just like in the 50's and 60's,)
might be bad for the community.

Just fill out this donor card,
in your shaky, liquored-up hand,
and be sure to indicate an alternate payment method,
in case your card is declined.

With liberty and vodka for all.
